Check out Librivox.org
Our family loves audio books. If you also love to listen to books, check out www.Librivox.org. The George family introduced us to Librivox and it's great! They use volunteer readers so some books are better than others, but it is a great resource. Some readers are actually very good.
Many classics are listed, as are just good old fashioned books. All books on the site are in public domain, so most are at least 75 years old. If you love Louisa May Alcott - most of her books are on the site. Here are a few others that might pique your interest:
Bailey, Arthur Scott - children's stories about nature*
Ballentyne - Vision Forum sells these adventure stories by this author
Baum, Frank - Wizard of Oz and many of his other books
Cooper, James Fenimore - Last of the Mohicans
Dawson, Sarah - Confederate Girls Diary*
Dumas, Alexandre - Man in the Iron Mask
Finley, Martha - Elsie Dinsmore books
Ford, Henry - My Life and Work*
Fox's Book of Martyrs
Hale, Mabel - Beautiful Girlhood
Henty, G.A. - Historical fiction that my son really enjoys! Also promoted by Vision Forum
Keller, Helen - Autobiography
Kipling, Rudyard - Jungle Book and others
Lawrence, Brother
LeFeuvre, Amy - Teddys Button
Montgomery, L.M. - Anne of Avonlea and many others (we've been listening to The Story Girl and The Golden Road)
Muller, George - Answers to Prayer*
Rankin, Carol Watson - Dandelion Cottage - this is a cute girl book for young girls (but I liked it too)
*these are books that sound good, but I haven't personally listened to.
I would preview anything you are not familiar with to make sure the content is okay for your kids. I have been a little surprised that even some old books have content that is inappropriate.
The best way I've found to download these is to choose the option that says "subscribe in itunes" and download it into itunes, it then appears in my windows media player and I can sync it to my mp3 player.
Each book has a short description and you can listen to a portion of it before downloading the book.
Let us know if you know of any other good books you find on Librivox by emailing us at teachtlh@gmail.com.
