This week TEACH families went on a field trip to see Columbus' Nina & Pinta Replica Ships! We had a great time on our tour learning about the ships and how they were used in Columbus' travels.

WCTV Field Trip Photos

We had such a wonderful time touring the WCTV Studios!

The children learned about all that goes on behind the scenes to create news broadcasts each day. We were able to see how green screens work, sit at the news desk and film a greeting to go on air, observe the reporters and anchors working in the news room, and view the control room.

We also learned about robotic cameras, teleprompters, and what it is like to be a news anchor from our wonderful tour guide, Shonda Knight. The children were able to ask questions, and to hear from a news anchor and control room operators about how they prepared for and what they enjoy about their careers.

Fall 2014 TEACH Field Trip Photos

We had a wonderful tour (and lunch) on our White Oak Pastures Field Trip, 

visiting the largest USDA Certified Organic farm in the state of Georgia!

 We enjoyed the beautiful Christmas decorations and learned about our state's history on the

Florida Governor's Mansion Field Trip

We climbed a 57 foot high Indian Mound and toured the Excavated Mound Museum on the
Kolomoki Mounds State Park Field Trip

We fed farm animals, observed chicks hatching from their eggs, and learned about 

exotic animals at the North Florida Fair Field Trip.

 Fascinating Florida history and wildlife were on display on our  

Tallahassee Museum Field Trip.

What a fun day it was learning about fire safety and the important work that firefighters do every day at our Quincy Fire Department Field Trip.

Fire Department Field Trip Photos

Our group had such a wonderful time at our field trip to the Quincy Fire Department!

Details: Join TEACH for a fun and educational field trip to the Tallahassee Museum! We will walk along the Wildlife Florida Trail, explore the Big Bend Farmstead and have lunch together at the picnic tables near the playground. You can bring a sack lunch, or purchase lunch from the Museum's Cafe (see the menu here).

This is a great field trip for ALL ages!

Field Trip: White Oak Pastures Farm

Details: Join TEACH for this Saturday field trip that is perfect for families! White Oak Pastures is a multi-generational family farm that cooperates with nature to produce artisan products that are healthy, safe, nutritious, and delicious.

We will have a 1-hour guided walking tour and observe the beef and poultry abattoirs, biddy and bunny barn, egg candling machine, and 6-acre organic vegetable farm. After the tour, families can choose to eat lunch featuring food grown and raised right on the farm at the White Oak Open Air Restaurant (see a sample menu here). Another lunch option is to bring your own lunch and eat at a picnic area at the nearby Kolomoki Mounds State Park.

Since Kolomoki is so close to White Oak Pastures (a 19 minute drive), some families will be making a day of it by touring the Kolomoki Indian Mounds following the White Oak tour and lunch. All families are welcome! See Kolomoki Park admission fee information here.

Details: The Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra gives an annual Young People’s Concert for children, a cultural event of exceptionally high quality focused on presenting a live symphonic music experience to young people. This year’s program, Spaceman Invades Symphony, is programmed for students in first through fifth grades. TSO does not mind younger & older children attending as long as they have seats available and if the children can sit quietly and attentively during the concert (last year a member brought her 4 year old along). Space is limited, so sign up early. Due to the nature of this field trip, payment is due by October 3rd and tickets are non-refundable.

If you cannot attend the field trip on Thursday, there is a Family Night Spaceman Invades Symphony concert on Friday, Nov. 21st at 7:00pm at Ruby Diamond. It is still $7 per person. Please go to: www.tallahasseesymphony.org to buy tickets.

Park Day this Friday

Park Day is Friday, April 13th at Winthrop Park.  The time is 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.  Come enjoy this spring weather.  Bring a lunch!

Garden Workshop at the Myers

I wanted to give everyone an update on the Garden Workshops that were held March 31st.  It was an overcast day, but only a few sprinkles showed up and didn't hinder the day.  Marlin did a great job of sharing what he does that works so well in his garden.  

 

Marlin's Gardening Tips:

1. Use a raised bed of at least 8 inches of top soil.
2. Place your raised ed in an area receiving at least 12 hours of daily sun.
3. Have a good water irrigation system.
4. Add many hardwood tree leaves to your garden area in the fall.
5. Add all your kitchen scraps to the garden (just veggies, no meat or fat products)
6. Plant all your seeds and plants close together.
7. Avoid (as much as possible) stepping on your planted areas.
8. Avoid using pesticides and insecticides (as much as possible).
9. Pull our the weeds and grass when possible.
10. Plant only vegetables and fruits that you and your family will eat.
11. Plant a garden size that you can comfortably manage.

Joe Budd Field Trip March 14th

Joe Budd Aquatic Educational Center

March 14th  9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Suggested age is 7 and up (moms are usually allowed to help younger kids - this has not been a problem in the past)

This is such a great field trip.  The kids are given instruction on how to fish and provided with all they need except worms.  They usually catch quite a few fish and the staff help put worms on and take fish off.  There is also a scavenger hunt for the younger ones and the older ones use microscopes to see what is in the lake.  The only cost is your worms.  You can buy them at Wal-mart.  They suggest one container of worms for 2 - 3 people.  If you let me know ahead of time, you can also buy them there.  For more info about Joe Budd, go here:  http://myfwc.com/education/outdoor-skills/joe-budd/ The video is good.

They will be filming a video on how to clean and filet fish.  They will instruct our kids in this.  We will need to sign a release.   If you are not interested in this you can still come at 10:00 a.m. for the field trip. 

Wear grubby clothing, and prepare to be in the sun (sunscreen or hats).  Both you and the kids may get dirty.  Wear tennis shoes if you will be going on the scavenger hunt.  Bring a cooler if you want to keep your larger fish.  BRING A LUNCH.  There is a nice picnic area.

Gardening in Small Spaces

Marlin Myers has the most amazing small vegetable garden.  He is willing to share his experience and knowledge with us.  I am trying to work out the details.  We could possibly do small groups at his home or do a large group somewhere else (maybe a park?).  If you are interested, email us at teachtlh@gmail.com  I will post more details as they come about.
